Breaking Barriers: The Change Generation will be a TV series of historical and biographical programs, highlighting the experiences of the 1960s generation of African-American college students who lived through the Civil Rights Era. The series will follow their extended journey through life over the last 50 years, as they were learning lessons and achieving victories, from the Freedom Rides to the presidency of Barack Obama. This generation became beneficiaries of the social, legal, political, economic and cultural changes that were the result of a generation of “First Blacks” or “Barrier-Breakers,” who worked and served as the first African-Americans in the emerging integrated world that followed the 1960s.
The series will begin with ”Breaking Barriers: The Freedom Riders,” an episode focusing on the lives of former Howard University students who participated in the Freedom Rides. The series will continue through the biographies of accomplished men and women who pioneered in the struggle to ”overcome.”
Philanthropic & Creative Entertainment LLC of Washington will produce Breaking Barriers: The Change Generation. The series is designed for national distribution through Channel 32, WHUT-TV, the PBS affiliate at Howard University.
